* The City of Melbourne gained Safe Community Accreditation on April 4, 2000, becoming the first capital city in the Southern Hemisphere to join the WHO Safe Community network. An international symposium was organised to coincide with Melbourne's accreditation and focused on the management of community safety in large urban environments.
